my best friend asked me to make this for her friend's father. when she asked me to do it, she was hoping to get it to him quickly as he had cancer and unfortunately fading quickly. also unfortunately, by the time i was done (it took me a 3 day weekend), he had already passed. the blanket is heading to his daughter, as a tribute to their family. the colors are based on his favorite team, the cleveland browns, and the helmets and footballs represent the parents and children.

so as we all know i went to Capetown, South Africa in the spring. i met, among many others there, a a 13 year old named Lysette who asked me to be her penpal! i have been sponsoring and writing to her for the past 6 months, and she's such a lovely little girl. south african Christmas, is of course, in the summer, so the director of Camp Sonshine Africa decided that the kids should have a wintery christmas in july. you ccan see the pictures, and donate to camp sonshine here. anyway, i sent her a home made hat, and it looks just like one i made for myself too. she wore it ice skating and showed off for the camera! how adorable is she?

FYI: i had to write out the pattern and it took me an hour and a half to do each color row by row. but the results were well worth it, no?

ok, math lesson! tessellations are lil shapes that fit perfectly into each other and repeat. wherein these seem to be quadrangles, technically, each color combo is made of 2 triangles of the same color. i just didnt split them up. take my word for it, ok? anywhoot, the clearly 2 dimentional "squares" have the exact same ammt of stitches making them up, so when they fit together, they produce a 3D effect to the eye. cool, right? it's on sale too!

SOUTH AFRICA- MISEDUCATION

So as we all know, I am headed to south africa on a mission trip in a few weeks. One of the things we're gonna do while we're there is to help with a school expansion and sponsor 2 young girls' tuition for the year. I'm so excited about this, because I had such a great education, and I feel like at the very least, everyone should have the basics, an equal chance to learn. Life is not fair, but for those on the earth that depend on schooling as a starting point should have the best they can get.

Unfortunately, in even one of the most modern cities in south africa, cape town, this is not always the case. These particular girls who we are sponsoring, came from a first grade class of 45 students. Granted, SA school children are notoriously better behaved than their american counterparts, but there's just no way to give the necessary individual care and attention a 6-yr-old needs when there are 44 other kids in the class who need it too. I have a few teacher friends who have classes of 18 and they have their rough days too. Imagine more than twice that!

Additionally, according to my understanding of the system, the teachers get paid less if a student has to repeat a grade. So they're less likely to do it. And let's say there's a child that doesn't get the basic learning tools they need at age 5,6,7... The trend of them being behind continues on for the rest of their time in school, because the teachers continue to pass them. They have to take a proficiency exam to get into secondary school, and this is when it's essentially found out that they didn't get the skills they needed after years of schooling. 23% of capetownians don't make it to high school and another 38% don't graduate out.

Now onto cost. School is not free in south africa for children of any age. The average cost is about R7000 (rand) per year, around 1000 american dollars. However, the average income of the people we are going to assist is R12000 per year. Essentially they're spending a third of their income (assuming there's 2 parents and only one child) for their child to go to elementary school. Add that to the fact that their child might not be able to gain a quality education in their school... It's very interesting and shocking to a person like me, who grew up in an educational system in the 90s that was pretty close to ideal. For free! And we've all heard stories of how people here in the US graduated out of a system that failed them, but it's not the norm. I fear there's a cycle that's carried out in Cape Town, where the majority of people don't become educated, can't compete for better jobs, have children and can't send them to the better schools, and it all starts again.

Here's the good news though: it's not too late to help. As I said before, I'm going to SA and we're sponsoring 2 wonderful girls at the beginning of their educational journey. Helping ease the financial burden of their family and sponsoring their tuition, helping them get into a school with more personalized attention, making sure they absorb all the info they can gain. They want to learn and we want to make sure they have that chance.

We're also helping an organization called Camp Sonshine Africa, which enriches the students with a breakfast program and tutors them after school. They believe in the youth of cape town and their future.

after doing the scott pilgrim hat, i thought, i bet i could do real people too. so i had this picture of myself, and my brother, talented kid, turned me into a cartoon and drew it on my rollerskates. i decided to use his cartoon, and turn it into a cross stitch! it was a never ending evolution.

finished!!! the face was hard. i had to find a skin tone that matched mine but didnt wash out the black lines and the hair. im gonna fill in the eyes too with that same shade of brown.

now what do i do with it? i think it'd be silly for me to walk around with a hat with my own face on it. thought it is good advertisement!

I've always found the world fascinating. I grew up in an area where people have come from different parts of the world and different cultures. If i remember correctly, my grandmother was the first of her family to be born in the united states. I used to say I wanted to visit all 50 states before I went outside the country, but I doubt that will happen now. In 2 months, I am going to south africa.

I don't feel like God "speaks" to me. Not like he did to people in the Bible at least. Instead, I feel like He pushes and pulls me in certain directions. Last summer He led me to my church's volunteer site. I was looking at things to do locally, and in the church, when I hit our global x site and started to look around. This was right after the flood in tennessee and I was wondering how they put together that trip and I saw trips to haiti and other locations. I even remember talking to my best friend about going to asia and working with orphans. But at the time, every trip was booked. I would have to wait til 2011, which was fine, because I couldn't really afford to pick up and leave the country. I didn't even have a passport! But the idea stayed in my mind.

Late fall, the global x site updated their trips schedule. By then, everyone had known that I was going to leave the country in 2011. I talked to members of my small group, some of whom have been on mission trips, and they were such an encouragement. I looked at their pictures and talked to them about their trips and the pulling only got stronger. It was always on my mind. I'm sure the people I saw frequently got tired of me talking about it.

I searched the site for the trip was right for me. Talking to my friend again, my thoughts were on something warm and tropical. But clearly God wanted me to know this was not a vacation. I wasn't qualified for any of those trips! Each one asked for a specific skill set that I didn't necessarily have, or they were for families, or students. I remember leaving the site thinking I wouldn't be able to go.

Luckily I decided to look again. I read the descriptions of each trip without looking at the locations. I tried to find one that said "joy. You can do this, so come do it." I found one that asked for a person who was good with tools and wasn't afraid to get their hands dirty. If anyone reading this has known me at any point in my life, they know this is me. I've been a tomboy since I could run, I played sports, and in high school my mostly female classmates and I built a house on stage for a play. We were mean with a power drill.

Turns out this trip was for south africa, in march. It cost $3200. I knew that if I had faith, I could raise the money. I had time, and hopefully a lot of support. I applied for the trip and waited.

Everything I've done since then has been on faith. I've been telling everyone that I was going, of course truthfully letting them know that I had to wait for approval. I went and got my passport (it just arrived this week). I began to save money. I checked out camp sonshine, the people in SA we'd be working with. I prayed that this was what God wanted.

Fast forward to this week. (In reality, it was a very slow forward. One of the virtues I don't have is patience. I'm working on it!) I wake up to an email from my "trip captain" saying that our first meeting is this Sunday. I got my approval! And just days after my passport arrived!

Now I have 2 months to raise the money for the trip and get mentally and spiritually prepared. I'm so excited and nervous, and I know I have to do well. Not just for me or the people who are supporting me in america, but for the people whose lives I'll affect on the other side of the world. I want to be an example to them of what happens when God moves through people. Of grace, and what happens when people come from across the earth to help people they've never met. I want them to know someone cares. I haven't even been there yet and I care.

spiderman!!! woo!! this one was cool to make because it was one of those times when i had to think outside the box in order to make spiderman look authentic. he was lookin kinda funny without the web on his face, then i remembered i had cross-stitch thread (i usually use yarn for the bugger projects)and it worked great! also, the name was actually longer at first, and then i find out i wasnt supposed to use her whole name! instead of re-doing the whole nameplate (twice), i got creative and got some scissors! i managed to cut the mesh without hacking up the yarn, then i re-wove the border of the name plate. whew! that saved me a lot of headache...

dear blog/crochet family:

on December 23, 2009, my grandmother, the Anna of AnnaLula, passed away. she was 81 years old. my favorite person in the world is gone from this earth, but present with the Lord and in my heart and the hearts of her many children, grandchildren, great grands, great great grands, along with all the others whose lives she touched. she lived a long and wonderful life, and as i said before, she helped me become the woman i am today. i was fortunate enough that she recieved the scarf i recently made her, and that she was able to read the letter i wrote her- my grandma loved reading and writing letters. she was indeed one of the most wonderful people to ever touch this earth, and she'll be greatly missed. thank you all for the support and kind words, and of course i'll be on my game that much more in 2010 because i know that's what she would want to see me do! so keep those orders coming! here's a few pix i wanted to share with you of my lovely grandma.
